The Clear Waterproofing Membrane offers an alternative approach to incorporating decorative wallpaper into interior design. Rather than limiting your choices to conventional wall finishes, wallpaper waterproofing can help you explore distinctive patterns, textures and colours in suitable applications. Whether you prefer a tropical bathroom theme, a geometric feature wall or an eye-catching mural, a clear waterproofing coating may help make your design vision possible.
Traditionally, using wallpaper in wet areas has been discouraged because moisture can affect the wallpaper, adhesive and underlying surface. Remedial Membranes developed its clear membrane for remedial waterproofing applications, including suitable wet areas and balconies. Its potential for decorative finishes provides another option for homeowners exploring waterproof wallpaper for bathrooms and creative renovation ideas.
With the right preparation and compatible materials, wallpaper waterproofing can create additional design opportunities in selected bathrooms, splashbacks and shower areas. A clear waterproofing membrane is intended to provide a protective layer while retaining the appearance of the underlying decorative surface. The final suitability depends on the wallpaper type, adhesive, substrate, exposure conditions and complete waterproofing system.
Before applying a waterproof wallpaper coating, check the manufacturer’s technical documentation and follow the recommended installation procedure. Areas exposed to frequent direct water contact require particular care, including attention to joints, corners, penetrations and wall-to-floor junctions. A decorative coating should not be assumed to replace every component required for a compliant wet-area waterproofing system.
One of the biggest attractions of waterproofing wallpaper is the opportunity to create a distinctive interior without relying exclusively on traditional tiles. From botanical prints and artistic murals to contemporary geometric designs, decorative wallpaper can help establish a unique atmosphere. A compatible clear waterproofing membrane may provide an additional option for protecting selected finishes in appropriate bathroom and splashback applications.
Cost is another consideration when planning a bathroom renovation. Replacing existing finishes can involve labour, preparation and material expenses, depending on the project. Wallpaper waterproofing may offer an alternative worth investigating when you want a more personalised design. Actual costs will depend on the wallpaper, surface condition, preparation requirements, membrane coverage and installation method.
A clear waterproofing membrane is designed to form a protective layer over a suitable prepared surface. For wallpaper applications, compatibility between the membrane, wallpaper material and adhesive is essential. Correct preparation and application help support the intended performance of the waterproofing system while preserving the decorative appearance as far as the product specifications allow.
Before treating an entire wall, follow the official installation guide and test a wallpaper offcut where recommended. Check adhesion, appearance and compatibility before proceeding. Allow the membrane to cure according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and do not expose the treated surface to water until the specified curing period has been completed. For detailed instructions, consult the Waterproofing Wallpaper Installation Guide.
Selecting the right wallpaper waterproofing kit begins with understanding the size of your project and the surface you intend to treat. Remedial Membranes offers a dedicated 4-litre Wallpaper Waterproofing Kit for customers exploring this application.
Before purchasing, review the current product specifications, stated coverage, application requirements and available finish options. Surface preparation and the number of coats required can affect the amount of product needed. If you are unsure whether your wallpaper or proposed wet-area application is suitable, contact Remedial Membranes for product guidance before beginning the project.
The suitability of waterproof wallpaper depends on more than the decorative design. The wallpaper backing, adhesive, wall substrate, water exposure and installation details all influence whether a proposed application is appropriate. Areas exposed to standing water or frequent direct shower spray need particular consideration, and not every wallpaper or wall assembly will be suitable.
For Australian bathroom renovations, check the applicable building requirements and the complete waterproofing system before proceeding. Where the project requires professional assessment, seek advice from an appropriately qualified waterproofing professional. A clear coating should not be treated as a universal solution for every wallpaper, substrate or wet-area condition.

“I recently had a failed waterproofing membrane under a tiled balcony. This resulted in substantial leakage and major damage to my ceiling…A clear waterproofing membrane from Remedial membranes was applied over the existing tiles. I found them professional, on time, and did an excellent job. Our balcony has not leaked despite substantial rain since the repair.”
“Great Business to deal with. Keep you updated and in the picture. Had no issues at all. Great product – does the job and finish is good. We had our steps and front Patio done. Impressive ! Would recommend product & Supplier with no hesitation.”
“I contacted Remedial Membranes after we sold our house but one of the conditions of the sale was the showers to be repaired. We didn’t have any spare tiles and the new owners did not want the look to change so the idea of putting a clear membrane over the surface was a perfect solution to everyone involved. The job was done in 1 morning and the sale went through. Highly recommend Remedial Membranes. Their ability to work to a deadline was fundamental for the success!”
Why do leaky balconies occur anyway?
Most leaks occur due to movement in the substrate. As the membrane is in the middle of the construction configuration it is impossible to access it for repair. Ongoing movement is expected in the substrate, especially on a timber frame, so the only way to repair a leaky balcony is with a flexible membrane.
With a clear membrane installed on top, it’s easier to identify leaks and to patch repair. It’s estimated that the cost of DIY installation of our Clear Waterproofing Membrane costs LESS THAN 10% of the cost it would be to replace the damaged membrane under the tiles!
